Taking Taxi to Canada: COVID-19 testing for travellers

Pre-entry test requirements

All travellers 5 years of age or older, regardless of citizenship, must provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test result.
At this time, proof of having a vaccine does not replace a valid test result.

You must:

  1. Take a test before you leave the United States within 72 hours of your entry into Canada
  2. Your test must be performed in the United States
  3. Provide one of the accepted types of tests, not an antigen test
  4. Keep proof of your test results for the 14-day period that begins on the day you enter Canada

PROVIDING PROOF OF YOUR RESULT

You must present an accepted test result (paper or electronic proof) which must include:

  1. Traveller name and date of birth
  2. Name and civic address of the laboratory/clinic/facility that administered the test
  3. The date on which the test was conducted
  4. The type of test conducted
  5. The test result

At this time, we encourage travellers to make best efforts to have their test performed at a reputable laboratory or testing facility (i.e., one recognized by the local government or accredited by a third party, such as a professional organization or international standards organization).
You must show proof of your test results even if you:

  1. Have tested negative for COVID-19 before the 72 hour period
  2. Have been vaccinated for COVID-19
  3. Recovered from COVID-19 and no longer test positive
  4. Recovered from COVID-19 and continue to test positive

ARRIVAL TESTING AT THE BORDER

Travellers entering Canada at the land border will be provided two COVID-19 test kits: one to use on the day they arrive in Canada and another to use on day 10 of their 14-day quarantine.

Travellers will be provided instructions within the kits on how to collect a nasal swab and send the sample for testing.

Some ports of entry offer on-site services to help you with your test kit. At these locations, you will be guided through specimen collection, including how to take a nasal swab yourself and how to package the specimen for testing.

Register to use a testing station at a land port of entry

ARRIVAL TEST AT YOUR QUARANTINE LOCATION

Complete the nasal swab at your place of quarantine if you are entering Canada at land border ports of entry where there is no on-site service location. You must:

  1. Register your kit by using the information provided in the kit
  2. Set up an online appointment with a health care professional who will guide you through the specimen collection process to ensure it is done correctly
  3. Use the information in the kit to arrange for your sample to be picked up and delivered to the laboratory

Traveling to Canada by land requirements checklist

During the COVID-19 pandemic, we strongly advise Canadians to cancel or postpone non-essential travel plans outside of Canada. Now is not the time to travel.

People who travel, regardless of citizenship, will need to follow testing and quarantine requirements to keep Canadians safe, particularly given the new COVID-19 variants in Canada and around the world.

BEFORE YOU TRAVEL TO CANADA BY LAND

The COVID-19 pandemic restricts travel to Canada and within Canada. It is essential to understand and comply with the requirements.
